Old US Military Aircraft at ‘Boneyard’ to Be Sold

Old US Military Aircraft at ‘Boneyard’ to Be Sold

End of Life Military Planes to Be Auctioned As Scrap Metal by Government Liquidation.

For the second time in its 10-year history auctioning surplus and scrap property for the Department of Defense, Government Liquidation will be selling a record-amount of scrap metal made up of decommissioned military aircraft including F-111 Aardvarks, C-5 Galaxies, F-15 Eagles, C-130 Hercules, S-3 Vikings and A-4 Skyhawks.

Currently at the "boneyard" at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, AZ, the aircraft are being sold for their base materials in the form of 27 million pounds of ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal. Starting Wednesday, March 21, 2012, Government Liquidation will be accepting bids on these end-of-life planes through its online marketplace.

The boneyard at Davis Monthan Air Force Base is the sole location for excess military and government aircraft. Currently over 4,200 planes are housed there and available for use, as functional aircraft, parts or equipment by U.S. military units throughout the world. After non-functional, end-of-life aircraft have been stripped of all components, the DoD turns them over to Government Liquidation to be auctioned for their scrap metal content. This 27 million pound scrap sale consists of aircraft parts constructed with metals such as aluminum, steel and titanium.

For over a decade, Government Liquidation has been the exclusive sales channel for scrap and surplus property from the Department of Defense. Over 19 million items in 500 different product categories are sold per year via its online auction. Bids for most items start at $150; this includes combat vehicles, medical equipment, field gear, scrap metal and watercraft.

"We receive 10,000 items per week and 20-30 million pounds of scrap metal per month from our government partner and continue to be successful in finding this inventory a home via our diverse buyer base," said Tom Burton, President of Government Liquidation. "By bringing the sale of retired military aircraft to our online auction marketplace, scrap buyers around the world have a unique opportunity to find and bid on top grade aerospace metals."

Government Liquidation, a Liquidity Services, Inc. marketplace, is a contractor of the DLA Disposition Services for the sale of surplus and scrap assets of the United States Department of Defense. Government Liquidation operates an innovative and powerful online sales channel that enables surplus and scrap buyers to purchase available government assets in a convenient and open environment in over 500 commodity categories.
