Philippine Navy Orders AW109s

Philippine Navy Orders AW109s

The Philippine navy has contracted AgustaWestland for two AW109 Power helicopters with an option to buy two more.

The helicopters, equipped with Pratt and Whitney PW206C engines, will be operated from ships and land bases for missions such as economic zone protection, surface surveillance, search-and-rescue and maritime security.

"We are delighted that the Philippine navy has selected the AW109 Power as part of its armed forces modernization program after an extensive evaluation of competing types," said Vincenzo Alaimo, AgustaWestland's head of regional sales for Southeast Asia. "The AW109 Power's multi-role abilities and high performance will provide the Philippine navy with an enhanced maritime operational capability."

AgustaWestland didn't provide details on the financial value of the contract which includes initial logistics support as well as aircrew and maintenance personnel training.

The aircraft will be delivered next year, the company said.

The AW109 has a maximum speed of 177 miles per hour and a ferry range of nearly 600 miles.
