Italy Next-Generation Tank Program

Italy Launches €8.2 Billion Next-Generation Tank Program to Modernize Army.
Rome partners with Leonardo and Rheinmetall to replace aging Ariete fleet with Panther KF51-based MBTs, strengthening NATO interoperability
Italy has approved a landmark €8.2 billion ($8.86 billion) defense investment to acquire new-generation Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) and modernize its army’s ground forces. The program, confirmed by a parliamentary committee, will run from 2025 to 2038 and represents one of the largest land force modernization efforts in Europe.
Of the total funding, €5.4 billion has already been allocated, while financing for the remaining €2.7 billion is under discussion. The initiative is part of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s broader push to strengthen defense procurement amid rising geopolitical uncertainty across Europe and NATO.
The new MBTs will be developed by Leonardo Rheinmetall Military Vehicles (LRM), a joint venture between Italy’s Leonardo and Germany’s Rheinmetall. The design will be based on Rheinmetall’s Panther KF51 platform, replacing Italy’s aging Ariete tanks, of which only about 50 remain fully operational.
This modernization underscores Italy’s commitment to reinforcing NATO interoperability, enhancing deterrence, and supporting domestic industry through international collaboration.
Recent reports confirm that Italy’s program has expanded significantly:
- Fleet Size: Italy now plans to procure up to 380 KF51 Panther tanks and over 1,000 KF41 Lynx infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs).
- Budget: The expanded program is expected to exceed €10 billion, making it one of Europe’s largest armored procurement initiatives.
- Industrial Role: The Leonardo-Rheinmetall JV will carry out 60% of production in Italy, ensuring domestic industry participation and export potential.
- Capabilities: The KF51 Panther features a 130 mm L/52 smoothbore cannon, advanced digital fire-control systems, and modular armor packages, offering superior firepower compared to Italy’s current 120 mm Ariete tanks.
- Strategic Impact: Analysts note that with 380 Panthers and 1,050 Lynx IFVs, Italy could field Western Europe’s most powerful armored force, surpassing France and rivaling Germany.
