In the Netherlands, the Coastguard is a joint organization utilizing assets and personnel from several ministries. Its "heavy" aviation capability—specifically for search and rescue (SAR) and offshore patrol—is provided by the Defence Helicopter Command (DHC), which operates military-grade airframes in a maritime security role.

ROYAL NETHERLANDS COASTGUARD • Kustwacht Nederland

Personnel: ε6,500 (Military Constabulary support) / ε7,350 (Navy/Marine integrated totals). Status: Operational (Multi-agency agency supported by the Ministry of Defence). Strategy: Maritime law enforcement, search and rescue (SAR), and protection of critical North Sea infrastructure.

Forces by Role & Equipment by Type

HELICOPTER 19 active maritime-tasked airframes.

Maritime Surveillance & Search and Rescue (SAR):

  • 19 NHIndustries NH90 NFH (NATO Frigate Helicopter).

UNMANNED AERIAL SYSTEMS (UAS)

Persistent Maritime ISR:

  • 4 General Atomics MQ-9A Reaper (Fleet expansion to 8 units in progress).
    • (Note: Operated by the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) to provide long-range maritime domain awareness and intelligence support for the Coastguard).
• Offshore Patrol & Defense Systems (Surface Assets)

PATROL AND COASTAL COMBATANTS 4 principal platforms.

Offshore Patrol (PSOH):

  • 4 Holland-class.
    • Defense Systems: Equipped with 1 x 76mm main gun.
    • Aviation Capacity: Flight deck and hangar designed for 1 x NH90 medium helicopter.

MINE COUNTERMEASURES & SUPPORT

  • 5 Alkmaar-class (Tripartite) Minehunters.
  • 3 Logistics & Survey Vessels (including the Hydrograaf and Snellius-class).

Strategic Note (2026): By 2026, the Royal Netherlands Coastguard has become a central pillar in the protection of the Kingdom's critical subsea infrastructure following increased regional security concerns. Under the 2024 White Paper, the Netherlands is modernizing its maritime surveillance network by integrating data from MQ-9 Reaper UAVs and satellite-based Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) to provide a clear maritime picture. While the Coastguard is a civilian-led agency, its operational effectiveness is ensured through deep integration with the Royal Netherlands Navy and the Defence Helicopter Command, allowing for seamless interoperability with NATO allies. Furthermore, the Koninklijke Marechaussee (Military Constabulary) provides a specialized paramilitary force of ε6,500 for border security and law enforcement at sea and in major ports. Domestic industrial support, including maintenance from Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding and aerospace component manufacturing from DutchAero, remains vital for the lifecycle support of these high-readiness assets.
