Embraer’s Eve Completes First Flight of Full-Scale eVTOL Prototype

Embraer’s Eve Completes First Flight of Full-Scale eVTOL Prototype

Milestone marks progress toward certification as company targets 2027 for commercial entry into service.

Eve, the electric aircraft subsidiary of Brazilian planemaker Embraer, announced that its full-scale “flying car” prototype has successfully completed its maiden flight, a major step toward certification and eventual commercial deployment.

Eve is one of several companies developing battery-powered aircraft capable of vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) for short urban trips, a sector analysts view as critical to Embraer’s future growth. The company has already secured nearly 3,000 pre-orders for its aircraft ahead of production.

The inaugural flight took place at Embraer’s Gaviao Peixoto facility, launching Eve’s flight test campaign. Hundreds of additional flights are planned for next year to support certification. The test validated the aircraft’s architecture, fly-by-wire controls, and integrated propulsion systems.

“The prototype behaved as predicted by our models,” said Luiz Valentini, Eve’s Chief Technology Officer. “With these data points, we will expand the envelope and progress toward transition to wingborne flight in a disciplined manner.”

Eve expects type certification, first deliveries, and entry into service in 2027 — a year later than initially planned. Six conforming prototypes will be built for the test campaign.

Brazil’s civil aviation regulator ANAC has identified certification of Eve’s aircraft as a top priority, also pointing to 2027 as the realistic timeframe.

Eve debuted on the New York Stock Exchange in 2022 and has since raised additional funding from Brazil’s state development bank BNDES and Embraer. Other investors include United Airlines, BAE Systems, Nidec, Thales, and Accion.
