Capabilities & Role:
The Angolan National Air Force is numerically one of the largest and best-equipped air arms in Sub-Saharan Africa, primarily tasked with sovereignty protection and maritime security for offshore resources. In 2026, the force is continuing a modernization program characterized by the integration of Turkish Bayraktar TB2 UAVs for persistent surveillance and the acquisition of Spanish C295 aircraft for strategic lift and maritime monitoring. While the force maintains modern platforms like the Su-30, it continues to face significant readiness and maintenance challenges due to its heavy reliance on obsolescent Soviet-era equipment. Strategic airlift remains a core capability through its extensive Il-76 and Antonov fleets.
