French Special Operation Forces (SOF) Aviation

French Special Operations aviation is a joint capability integrated across the Special Operations Command (Commandement des Opérations Spéciales - COS), primarily drawing assets from the Army’s 4th Special Forces Helicopter Regiment (4e RHFS) and the Air and Space Force’s specialized transport and helicopter squadrons.

FRENCH SPECIAL OPERATION FORCES AVIATION • COS

Personnel: ε2,200 (Army SOF component). Status: Operational / High-Readiness. Strategy: Unconventional warfare, counter-terrorism, and deep-strike infiltration/exfiltration modernized under the LPM 2024–2030 framework.

• AIRCRAFT (Tactical Transport & Special Missions) 20+ active platforms.

Special Operations Transport (Fixed-wing):

• 13 Lockheed Martin C-130H/H-30 Hercules.
• 2 Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules.
  • (Note: These assets, primarily from the "Poitou" transport squadron, are equipped for low-level night flight and austere landings).
• 5 De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter (Tactical utility/liaison).

Specialized Intelligence & Support:

• 2 Dassault Falcon 8X (SIGINT) (1 additional unit on order).

• HELICOPTER (Special Operations Rotary-wing) 100+ active airframes.

Heavy-Lift & CSAR (Combat Search and Rescue):

• 26 Airbus H225M Caracal.

Attack & Escort:

• 67 Eurocopter Tiger (Standardized to HAD/HAD-E standard).

• 103 Aerospatiale SA342 Gazelle.
  • (Note: Armed variants used for light reconnaissance and anti-armour support during SOF missions).

New Generation Multi-role:

NAVAL SPECIAL OPERATIONS (COMMANDOS MARINE)

The French Navy Commandos (700 personnel) utilize integrated naval aviation assets for maritime counter-terrorism and amphibious raiding.

Maritime Special Ops Support:

• 41 Aerospatiale AS365/565 Dauphin/Panther.

Strategic Note: 2026, French Special Operations aviation has focused on "high-intensity" readiness as dictated by the latest National Strategic Review. The core of the force is transitioning toward the H160M Guépard and the upgraded Tiger HAD, while the Air Force transport component is increasingly reliant on the modernized C-130H and A400M fleets to provide global strategic reach. Furthermore, the integration of heavy MQ-9A Reaper uncrewed systems (12 active) provides persistent ISR and strike capability to support ground-based special operations detachments. This specialized structure is designed to maintain France's independent intervention capability in complex environments such as the Sahel and Indo-Pacific.
