In the French military architecture, aero-medical evacuation is an integrated capability managed by the Service de Santé des Armées (SSA) in coordination with the Air and Space Force, Army (ALAT), and Navy. Assets are modernized under the LPM 2024–2030 to ensure high-intensity readiness.

FRENCH MEDICAL AVIATION & MEDEVAC • Aero-medical Services

Personnel: ε5,000 (Integrated medical and aviation support staff). Status: Operational / High-Readiness. Strategy: Strategic and tactical aero-medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), search and rescue (SAR), and disaster relief using networked "high-intensity" platforms.

• HELICOPTER ε160+ active platforms (CSAR/SAR/Medical Configured).

Combat Search & Rescue (CSAR) & Heavy MEDEVAC:

• 26 Airbus H225M Caracal (18 with Air and Space Force; 8 with Army ALAT).
  • (Note: The primary heavy-lift asset for long-range medical extraction in hostile environments).

Tactical MEDEVAC & Vertical Lift (Stretcher Capable):

• 63 NHIndustries NH90 TTH (Caïman) (Army ALAT).

• 34 Aerospatiale SA330 Puma (19 with Air Force; 15 with Army).

• 41 Aerospatiale AS365/565 Dauphin/Panther (Navy assets for frigate-based and coastal medical response).
• 6 Airbus H160B (Navy leased units for interim SAR/EMS duties).
• 22 Airbus H160M Guépard (Initial deliveries: 1 to Air Force, 21 to Army).

Strategic Long-Range MEDEVAC:

• 13 Airbus A330 MRTT (Phénix) (Air and Space Force).
  • (Note: Equipped for the "Morphee" intensive care configuration for global strategic patient repatriation).
• 1 Airbus A330-200 (Strategic passenger/medical transport).

Theater/Intra-theater MEDEVAC:

• 27 CASA CN235 (Air Force tactical transport utilized for theater-level stretcher flights).
• 24 Airbus A400M Atlas (High-capacity evacuation and heavy medical logistics).

Maritime SAR & Long-Range Aero-medical Patrol:

• 8 Dassault Falcon 50 (MPA/SAR) (Navy).
• 12 Dassault Falcon 2000LXS (Albatros) (Navy; primary long-range surveillance and medical search asset).

Point-defence Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM):

Strategic Note: 2026, French medical aviation has prioritized "digitalization" and high-intensity capability over raw mass. The SSA's aero-medical framework is designed to provide a continuous medical chain from the point of injury (using H225M and NH90) to strategic stabilization and repatriation (via the A330 MRTT Phénix fleet). The transition toward the H160M Guépard—ordered across all branches—aims to standardize medical and rescue equipment across the services by the end of the decade. In the maritime domain, the full induction of the Falcon 2000LXS (Albatros) significantly expands the range and speed of medical search and coordination missions.
