Capabilities & Role
The Peruvian Army Aviation (AE) is primarily structured to provide tactical mobility, logistical support, and search and rescue capabilities in support of ground forces. The branch is organized into an Aviation Brigade and is a critical asset for operations in difficult terrain, such as the VRAEM region, where it supports the Army’s ongoing counter-insurgency mission against the Shining Path.
The backbone of the force is its large fleet of Russian-made Mi-17 and Mi-171 helicopters, which are essential for troop transport and medical evacuation in high-altitude and jungle environments. While the AE maintains a significant rotary-wing capability, the force continues to face readiness challenges due to an increasingly ageing inventory and fiscal constraints that have slowed broader modernization efforts across its fixed-wing and support assets. Coordination for internal security and counter-narcotics is often conducted in tandem with the Peruvian National Police and the Peruvian Air Force.
