Peruvian Air Force History

Peruvian Air Force

The historical development of aviation in Peru is characterized by a long-standing tradition of military air power, a strategic mix of Western and Eastern technology, and a robust indigenous maintenance capacity.

Foundations and Early Military Aviation

Military aviation in Peru began as an Army formation, with the Peruvian Aviation Corps (Cuerpo de Aviación del Perú) established in 1929. It was renamed the Peruvian Aeronautical Corps in 1936 before the Peruvian Air Force (Fuerza Aérea del Perú - FAP) was officially established in its modern, independent form in 1950. Peru has a long history of operating specialized platforms, being a long-established user of the BAC Canberra jet bomber, with the first examples received as early as 1956.

Cold War Expansion and Soviet Influence

By the late 1970s, the FAP had become one of the most modern air arms in South America. A defining historical moment occurred in 1977, when Peru became the first South American nation to acquire Soviet combat aircraft, taking delivery of Sukhoi Su-22 "Fitter-C" fighter-bombers. During this era, the force also operated:

  • French Technology: Dassault Mirage 5P fighters, which began arriving in 1968.
  • American Technology: Cessna A-37B Dragonfly light attack aircraft (delivered in 1976) and Lockheed C-130 Hercules transports.
  • Rotary-Wing Power: A diverse helicopter fleet including Bell 212s, Alouette IIIs, and heavy-lift Mil Mi-6 and Mi-8 helicopters from the USSR.

Conflict and Regional Leadership

Peru’s air power has been tested in regional disputes, most notably during the 1981 border conflict with Ecuador. Beyond its own borders, Peru played a significant role in the 1982 Falklands Conflict, where the FAP provided 10 Mirage 5P fighters to Argentina as emergency war aid in June of that year. By the early 1990s, the FAP maintained quantitative superiority over neighbors such as Bolivia, Chile, and Ecuador, despite facing readiness challenges with its Soviet-supplied equipment.

Modernization and the Shift to 4th Generation Jets

In the mid-1980s and 1990s, Peru continued to upgrade its front-line capabilities:

  • Mirage 2000: Peru acquired Mirage 2000P/DP fighters, with the first deliveries occurring in 1986–1987.
  • MiG-29 and Su-25: To modernize its fleet following regional tensions, Peru acquired Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrums and Sukhoi Su-25 Frogfoots.
  • Gunship Capability: The force integrated Mil Mi-24/25 "Hind" attack helicopters, which were notably used to combat anti-government guerrilla forces.

21st Century Operations and Readiness (2026)

In the modern era, the FAP is primarily tasked with maintaining territorial integrity and supporting counter-insurgency and counter-narcotics operations, specifically against the Shining Path in the VRAEM region.

By 2026, the FAP is ranked 58th in the Global Air Force Index. While fiscal constraints have slowed the acquisition of new fighter jets, the force has prioritized:

  • Strategic Lift: Modernization of the transport fleet with Alenia C-27J Spartans and second-hand KC-130H tankers from Spain.
  • Indigenous Industry: The state-owned aviation firm SEMAN has become a critical player, completing the final assembly of KT-1P trainers and providing heavy maintenance for the entire fleet.
  • Paramilitary Integration: The FAP coordinates closely with the Army Aviation (AE) and National Police (PNP), both of which operate extensive fleets of Russian-made Mi-17/171 helicopters for high-altitude tactical mobility.
