As non-sovereign territories, neither the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) nor the British Virgin Islands (BVI) maintains an independent, sovereign air force. Aviation support is provided by the parent nations (the United States and the United Kingdom) and integrated regional commands.
VIRGIN ISLANDS AVIATION • US Virgin Islands (US) & British Virgin Islands (UK)
Status: Overseas/Unincorporated territories. Defense: Provided by the United States and the United Kingdom. Organization: USVI aviation support is coordinated through the Virgin Islands National Guard (VING) and the Puerto Rico Air National Guard (PRANG); BVI support is provided by the UK Ministry of Defence.
Forces by Role & Equipment by Type
Territorial Air Support (Parent Nation Assets)
• AIRCRAFT
Regional Maritime Patrol & SAR (USCG Support - USVI) with external assets:
- Primary maritime domain awareness is provided by the United States Coast Guard (USCG).
- Fixed-wing assets utilized for territorial patrol include HC-130J Hercules and HC-144B Ocean Sentry platforms based in nearby Puerto Rico.
Strategic Transport & Disaster Relief (US/UK Support):
- Heavy airlift for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR) is provided by US Air Force (AMC) C-17 Globemaster III and C-130J units.
- The Royal Air Force (RAF) provides periodic transport support for the BVI using A400M Atlas or C-17 aircraft during regional emergencies.
• HELICOPTER
Search and Rescue (SAR) & Multi-role (USVI/BVI Support):
- Rotary-wing recovery and law enforcement are conducted by USCG MH-60T Jayhawk and MH-65E Dauphin helicopters.
- Tactical mobility for the VING is supported by US Army UH-60 Black Hawk and CH-47 Chinook units deployed from external commands such as US Southern Command.
- British maritime support for the BVI often includes Wildcat HMA2 or Merlin HM2 helicopters embarked on Royal Navy vessels on rotational Caribbean duty.
Note: By 2026, the Virgin Islands remain territories without independent sovereign military aviation branches. Aviation capabilities are defined by the "Total Force" approach of the parent nations, focusing on Maritime Domain Awareness and Disaster Response. The Virgin Islands National Guard (VING) serves primarily as a ground-based force, with its air requirements (situational awareness, medical support, and airlift) being met by the Air National Guard (PRANG) and federal agencies like the US Coast Guard. Under regional defense cooperation agreements, these islands are frequently part of large-scale exercises like Tradewinds, where external aviation assets are deployed to demonstrate regional security and response readiness.
