Norwegian Army (Hæren) Aviation support and Air Defence systems

Norwegian Army (Hæren) Aviation support and Air Defence systems

In the Norwegian defense structure, while the Army utilizes significant rotary-wing and unmanned capabilities, the physical airframes of the helicopters are managed and operated by the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) but are operationally dedicated to providing tactical mobility and battlefield support for Army formations like Brigade North.

NORWEGIAN ARMY AVIATION & AIR DEFENCE • Hæren

Army Personnel: ε8,300 (including ε4,400 conscripts). Status: Operational (NATO Integrated). Strategy: Territorial defense centered on the "High North" with an emphasis on high-readiness maneuver units and multi-layered ground-based air defense.

Forces by Role & Equipment by Type

AIR DEFENCE (GROUND-BASED)

Medium-range Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM):

  • NASAMS III (6 batteries).
    • (Note: The NASAMS system is a high-tech domestic product of Kongsberg and serves as the primary defensive umbrella for Army maneuver units and strategic infrastructure).

Point-defence Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM):

  • FIM-92 Stinger.
    • (Note: These are utilized for organic point-defense within maneuver battalions).

ARMY AVIATION SUPPORT (ROTARY-WING) These assets are Air Force-owned but operationally tasked for Army support.

Multi-role & Tactical Transport (Helicopter) with 2 active squadrons:

  • 18 Bell 412 (SP/HP) Twin Huey.
    • (Note: These helicopters are specifically assigned to support Army maneuver and special operations, based at Bardufoss for Northern support).

UNMANNED AERIAL SYSTEMS (UAS)

Nano & Small ISR UAVs:

  • Black Hornet (Nano-UAV).
    • (Note: Norway is a leading developer of nano-UAV technology, providing high-persistence local reconnaissance for frontline infantry).

ANTI-TANK & SURFACE MISSILES

Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGW):

  • FGM-148 Javelin.
  • RCL 84mm Carl Gustaf.

Supporting Ground Manoeuvre Elements

Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFV):

  • Main Battle Tanks: 36+ Leopard 2A4 (Upgrade to Leopard 2A7 standard ongoing through 2026).
  • Infantry Fighting Vehicles: 144 CV9030.
  • Armoured Utility Vehicles: 165 including Dingo 2, HMT Extenda, and IVECO LMV.

Artillery:

  • 24 155mm K9 Thunder (Self-propelled).

Strategic Note: By 2026, the Norwegian Army's aviation and air defense posture is defined by deep integration with Nordic allies (Finland, Sweden, and Denmark) under the "One Force" concept. A significant modernization priority has been the transition to NASAMS III, which offers improved networking and missile fusion capabilities. Additionally, the Army's mobility is being enhanced by a gradual increase in personnel numbers and the acquisition of new Leopard 2A7 tanks to maintain a credible deterrent in the High North. Norway has pledged to spend at least 2% of GDP on defense by 2026, ensuring continued logistical and maintenance support for these advanced systems through domestic firms like Kongsberg.
