Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) Aviation

Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) Aviation • Daehanminguk Haegun

As of 2026, the ROK Navy is significantly enhancing its maritime domain awareness and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities through the full induction of the P-8A Poseidon and the ongoing integration of MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. These assets are a vital component of the "Korea Air and Missile Defense" (KAMD) axis of the national "Three-Axis" defense strategy.

REPUBLIC OF KOREA NAVAL AVIATION • Daehanminguk Haegun

Personnel: ε70,000 (including ε29,000 Marines). Status: Operational / High-Readiness. Strategy: Maritime security, anti-submarine warfare, and sea-based ballistic missile defense (BMD) integrated into the Three-Axis Defense System.

  • 6 Boeing 737 (P-8A Poseidon) (Full fleet delivered by early 2026).
  • 15 Lockheed P-3C/CK Orion.
    • (Note: These 21 airframes provide the primary long-range sub-surface and surface tracking capability for the ROKN).

  • SM-3 Block IA (Aegis-integrated BMD interceptor).

Point-defence & Short-range:

  • Haegung (K-SAAM) (Indigenously developed; deployed on Daegu-class frigates and Marado LHD).
  • RIM-116 RAM.
  • RIM-7P Sea Sparrow.

COASTAL DEFENCE & POINT DEFENCE

Coastal Defence Missiles:

  • RGM-84 Harpoon (Truck-mounted launchers).
  • Hae Sung I (Surface-to-surface/Coastal variants).

Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Guns):

  • 20mm M167 Vulcan (Towed; primarily used by Marine formations for coastal point defense).
  • 30mm Goalkeeper CIWS / Phalanx Block 1B (Standard shipborne point defense).

Strategic Note: By 2026, the ROK Navy has moved toward a more proactive deterrent posture, transitioning from a coastal defense force to a "blue-water" capable navy with a robust aerial wing. The procurement of the P-8A Poseidon and MH-60R significantly improves its ability to counter North Korea's growing submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) threat. Furthermore, the ROKN is a key pillar of the Korean Air and Missile Defense (KAMD), with its Aegis-equipped destroyers providing sea-based BMD layers alongside land-based THAAD and M902 Patriot systems. Domestic industrial expansion, led by groups like Hanwha Ocean, continues to support the sovereign production of advanced maritime weaponry and uncrewed systems.
