Republic of Korea Marine Corps (ROKMC) Aviation

As of 2026, the ROKMC is significantly expanding its independent aerial capabilities under the Defense Innovation 4.0 program, transitioning from a force reliant on Navy/Army air assets to one with its own dedicated Helicopter Group.

REPUBLIC OF KOREA MARINE CORPS • Daehanminguk Haebyeongdae

Personnel: ε29,000. Status: Operational / Expanding Aviation Wing. Strategy: Rapid amphibious projection, littoral maneuver, and integrated air-ground operations as part of the national Three-Axis Defense System.

Forces by Role & Equipment by Type

HELICOPTER 29 active airframes.

Tactical Transport & Amphibious Support:

  • 29 MUH-1 Surion (Marineon).
    • (Note: These indigenously produced platforms are the core of the Marine Corps' vertical assault capability).

Attack / Close Air Support:

  • 1 Attack Helicopter Squadron (Forming/Transitioning).
    • (Note: ROKMC is establishing a dedicated attack air arm to supplement its transport squadrons).

AIR DEFENCE SYSTEMS (GROUND-BASED)

Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Guns):

  • 20mm M167 Vulcan.
    • (Note: Utilized in a direct fire and point defense role for coastal and beachhead security).

AMPHIBIOUS MANOEUVRE (INTEGRATED SUPPORT)

Amoured Amphibious Assault:

  • 166 AAV-7A1.
    • (Note: These vehicles provide the primary surface-based ship-to-shore movement for the Marine divisions).

Amoured Personnel Carriers (Wheeled):

  • ε20 K808.

Supporting Marine Fire Systems (2026)

  • Main Battle Tanks (MBT): 100: 60 K1E1; 40 K1A2.
  • Artillery (Self-propelled): ε40 K9 Thunder; ε20 K9A1 Thunder; ε20 M109A2.
  • Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MRL): 18 K239 Cheonmu (239mm).
  • Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (MSL): Spike NLOS (Self-propelled); Hyeongung (MANPATS).

Strategic Note: By 2026, the ROK Marine Corps has moved closer to achieving a "Multi-Dimensional Amphibious Maneuver" capability by standing up its own Helicopter Group, which currently consists of one attack and two transport squadrons. The induction of the MUH-1 Surion (Marineon) allows the ROKMC to conduct independent ship-to-shore vertical maneuvers, reducing its historical dependence on ROK Navy flight decks for tactical mobility. This aviation expansion is tightly integrated with heavy fire support assets like the K239 Cheonmu and K9 Thunder to ensure absolute dominance during amphibious operations against potential threats on the Korean peninsula.
