As of 2026, Libyan military structures remain divided between the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) and the eastern-based Libyan Arab Armed Forces (LAAF). Because there is no single unified command, aviation assets that perform army-support roles (attack, tactical mobility, and ISR) and air defense systems are listed by their de facto alignment.

LIBYAN ARMY SUPPORT & AIR DEFENCE

Personnel: ε4,000 (Total fragmented air and support elements) [Earlier Context]. Status: Operational / Fragmented (Engaged in territorial management). Strategy: Border security, protection of strategic oil infrastructure, and maintaining a militarized balance of power.

AIRCRAFT (COIN & Tactical Support)

  • 37 SIAI-Marchetti SF-260ML Warrior (GNU aligned; primary light strike/trainer).
  • 21 Aero L-39 Albatros (20 GNU, 1 LAAF; utilized for COIN and patrol).
  • 11 SOKO G-2 Galeb (GNU aligned).
  • 1 SOKO J-21 Jastreb (GNU aligned).

Anti-Aircraft Artillery (Guns):

  • 23mm ZU-23-2 (Fragmented; frequently truck-mounted as technicals).
  • 14.5mm ZPU-2 (Fragmented; truck-mounted).
  • (Note: Integrated foreign support from Turkish units in the west includes the MIM-23B Hawk, Korkut SP AA guns, and GDF-003 systems).
 Supporting Army Manoeuvre Elements

Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFV):

  • Main Battle Tanks: T-55; T-62; T-72.
  • Armoured Personnel Carriers (W): BTR-60; Mbombe-6; Panhard M3.
  • Protected Patrol Vehicles (PPV): Kirpi-2; Vuran; Al-Wahsh; Caiman.
  • Armoured Utility Vehicles (AUV): Nimr Ajban; Lenco Bearcat G3; Panthera T6.

Strategic Note: By early 2026, the Libyan Army's aviation and air defense capabilities are defined by a "militarized balance" between rival factions rather than unified sovereign control. The GNU in Tripoli relies heavily on Turkish technical support, specifically for the operation of advanced UAVs and point-defense systems. The LAAF in the east maintains a more diverse inventory of Russian and legacy French platforms, with reported support from the Wagner Group at strategic air bases. Overall readiness is severely impacted by the long-term lack of a domestic defense-industrial base and reliance on external parts and maintenance for aging Soviet-era hardware. Most operations are focused on neutralizing insurgent threats in the Sahelian border regions and securing territorial hubs.
